06: New York’s Smelliest Blocks

New York in the summer is rich with smells. In 2011 I was alerted to a piece of olfactory investigative journalism, and went to sniff for myself. The resulting piece is an auto-ethnographic response to the shapes and colours of smells in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and the cavernous gaps between noteworthy perceptions.

The article in question in New York Magazine’s 2011 Summer Guide is entitled “The Smelliest Block in New York” by Molly Young – “Deep in the Lower East Side, a terrible odour lurks. Where is it coming from?…”.
